Hi all. This was my first portrait, a gift for my friend's birthday. I've decided to start posting on dA so I can lean from all the talent swarming this blessed establishment. XD
This picture is rather light, and although I can blame the scanner somewhat, I think I need to be more bold with my use of black and not gray. I did not use a graph like some do, so this was the result of me eyeing a photograph. Should I use a graph next time?
Hints/Suggestions are welcomed. I want to learn!!! ^^
Very nice work! You've got clean rendering, good attention to tones and the proportions are working well. I don't think this piece really needs to go too much darker, but it couldn't hurt to experiment with heavier tones in the future.
In what sense do you mean using a graph?
Keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing more in the future XD
From what I've read, some artists use a graph with squares to plot out a photograph they're recreating. I've never done it myself, but some swear by it so naturally, I'm curious about it.

I think it looks amazing. I don't do portraits, so I am kinda in aww of them. I also didn't know if you were talking about a shade graph or a plot graph. I've never used a shading graph (im not even sure if Im thinking about the right thing) but I have used a plot graph. I hate 'em. For me it just comes out worse.

Ah, I don't work with photo recreations too often.
It never hurts to try something new, but I'm not sure you need it. Using a graph seems to be a good way to get familiar with proportions but if you already have the ability to judge things like that it's just going to be an extra step you don't need. Unless you're really concerned with making an exact replica I wouldn't worry about it.
I'm pretty new to working with photographs myself. I might try using one eventually but I'll just stick with what I know for now. *shrugs* In good time.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P
